Wizards of the Coast's latest AI experiment isn’t sexy, but we should still pay attention

When you say AI shouldn’t replace workers, that includes engineers.

Wizards of the Coast has partnered with Google Cloud and Canadian consultancy Datatonic to implement generative AI into three different internal “experiments”, according to a sponsored article in VentureBeat published last week.

Before you grab your digital pitchforks, this latest dalliance between the Dungeons & Dragons publisher and AI technology doesn’t immediately involve endangering the careers of artists, writers, and designers. It’s decidedly less sensational, as outlined in the article that was written by an unknown hand and simply “presented by Google Cloud.”

The partnership (more on that later) will develop generative AI tools to address three key problems: learning tools for new Magic: The Gathering players to use, better operational tools so any suit can “derive insights” from WotC’s proprietary data, and a code generation program that will ostensibly improve the workload of the company’s engineers.
