Last weekend, Games Workshop held its annual Golden Demon competition at SPIEL in Essen, Germany, marking the first time the European leg was held outside of one of GW’s own UK events. Despite being tied to a single company, with many restrictions on what can be entered, Golden Demon continues to be one of the world’s premiere miniature painting competitions. The combination of masterful brushwork and creativity produces miniatures that are a joy to behold, especially if you get the opportunity to do so in person.
As usual, there were hundreds of entries across sixteen categories, ranging from single miniatures to units of troops and even complex dioramas. The Open Competition is always one of the most interesting categories, as not only is it open to GW staff members, but there are very few limits on what can be entered The competition rules state that entries may include “everything from single miniatures and vehicles to dioramas, busts, larger-scale miniatures, small armies or themed collections.” This invites all kinds of weird and wonderful entries, but those aren’t necessarily the ones that win.
