COMING SOON: A Tragic Two-Player Zombie Card Game
The Time We Have: A Conversation Between Brothers promises to give a devastating zoomed-in look at the zombie genre
When the world ended, you lost everything. You survived because you had each other.
Now, one of you has been infected. In your final days together, what will you say?
The latest project from Elliot Davis, the designer of Project ECCO and Rom Com Drama Bomb, is a tragic turn into duet games. The Time We Have is a storytelling card game played on opposite sides of a closed door and a conversation about saying goodbye. The game is headed to BackerKit for crowdfunding on October 29th.
This two-player TTRPG will guide players through the tragic and intimate story of two brothers and the final days before one of you turns. Players take turns drawing cards, asking questions, and processing this change together. Once the door is closed, the story begins. In the end, it is up to the surviving brother: Do you open the door?
The campaign will raise funds to produce an 80-card tarot-sized game deck in the style of games like For The Queen. Additionally, the funds will go towards paying an incredible line up of talented artists.
Davis is collaborating with Ripley Ash who is illustrating the game. B Marsollier of Planet Arcana designed the title logo. Additionally, there are 9 guest illustrators who will contribute unique pieces of "Door" art to cards that help players define the zombie apocalypse they are playing within. These guest contributors include Nadhir Nor, Conor Nolan, Sonya Henar, Victor Winter, Justin McElroy, Raul Volpato, Evangeline Gallagher, John Gagne, and West Cahall.
On the writing front, Samantha Leigh joins with Elliot once again as the editor for the project. Additionally, there are 8 guest writers who will contribute small pieces of micro-fiction that define the apocalypse-defining "Door" cards. These guests include Caro Asercion, Viditya Voleti, Caleb Zane Huett, Kendrick Smith, Kyle Tam, Dillin Apelyan, J Strautman, and Taylor Navarro.
Throughout the campaign, supporters can expect a line-up of actual play performances to help highlight the game with one-shots and streamed play throughs by My First Dungeon, StellaLuna, queeRPG, Tales Yet Told, Party of One (Patreon), One Shot, No Quest for the Wicked, and more. Additionally, there will be an official theme song by Davis's frequent collaborator BE/HOLD.
"There is a kind of game that makes my brain explode—that which leans into specificity in its premise and design." Elliot cites games like For the Queen and Alice is Missing as key inspiration as well as zombie media like The Last Of Us and I Am Legend. "But most of all, I am inspired by my own brothers, everything they have taught me, and everything we have been through together."
Despite the specific premise, this game is meant for everyone. "If I’ve done my job right, whether you are a brother or not, this game will guide you in telling your own story of brotherhood, loss, and of course, zombies."
