The battle for RPG discovery will happen at Friendly Local Games Stores
We ride at dawn. Or at 10 AM, when the doors open.
I’ve been to Rochester many times, but last week I made a visit to a store that some of you might recognize: Millennium Games. Tucked away in a strip mall off a couple major roads, this is the “world’s largest game store,” at least according to its trademarked bumper stickers. Now, while I can neither confirm nor deny this claim (I did attempt to verify it, and at 28,000 square feet Millennium is certainly one of the largest stores around), the store boasts something that I do think deserves commendation: an incredible TTRPG section that goes well beyond Dungeons & Dragons, and a delightfully keen curator.
Walking into the store you are immediately greeted by a table laying out new TTRPG releases—like Notorious and Outsiders from indie outfits like Jason Price to a stack of Candela Obscura from Darrington Press. More than that, just a few steps away from that is a display featuring Eat the Reich, books, dice, and even a large, person-sized coffin standee with a small cutout for the bold vampire spawn to peer out of. Yours truly, giddy with the novel thrill of seeing a promotional standee for Rowan, Rook & Decard’s new vampires v. Nazis game, immediately hopped behind the coffin for a candid, enclosed below. I was making a funny face on purpose but be assured; I am thrilled.
