Welcome to Imaginara, where stories live
STORIES CARRY MORE POWER than most readers will ever know. This power is bound within words and ideas that allow readers to use their imagination. It is the collective energy of imagination itself that allows Imaginara – the world of the new Once Upon roleplaying game – to exist as a physical representation of the
creativity and emotion elicited by the tales we tell.
The stronger the connection between a reader and the characters they´re imagining, the more powerful those characters become. Conversely, if the readers stop believing in characters and their stories, the weaker those characters become as they adventure through the realm of Imaginara.
Once Upon... the Role-Playing Game
In Once Upon, players take on the roles of fantastical characters inspired by stories of heroism and growth. While many fairytale inspired games choose to focus on some of the darker aspects of Storybook Roleplaying, Once Upon believes that focusing on the bright, creative, and heroic nature of the genre makes for better long-term storytelling.
Whether it ́s an anthropomorphic dinner plate looking to rescue their friend the spoon from a jumping cow corrupted by The Gloom, or a middle school kid translocated to Imaginara by a well in their backyard, the stories told within Once Upon are based on the reader ́s belief in them.
When a character tells a heroic story, this belief grows. If their story becomes less interesting or heroic, this belief begins to diminish.
Once Upon focuses on the heroic and fantastical stories that characters in storybooks experience over time. These stories challenge the characters to push themselves and to dig deep to find success. While the characters interact with the story in an interesting and exciting way, the fictional readers build belief in the character. This belief powers the heroes to do more amazing things; however, The Gloom is always lurking, seeking to consume the memory of characters in whom the readers have lost their faith.
