I was standing in the parking lot of a rural gas station when the magic of trading card games found me. The Pokémon Trading Card Game had lit my elementary school ablaze, and my poor mother was already indulging my demands for booster packs. A honk from behind drew my attention to an SUV crawling down the country road, my best friend pressing a Gastly card against the window for me to witness. His shit-eating grin is seared into my gray matter like a brand.

Nobody had told me you could find Gastly in the base set or either of its first two expansions, Jungle and Fossil. This was 1999, and information about games disseminated to young audiences through magazines, commercials, and schoolyard rumors. Several kids would drop apocryphal stories from older siblings into our little water cooler, and we would spin them into legend by the end of recess. It was an ignorant but blissful time where everything you could or needed to know about your current obsession existed within the bounds of our adolescent reality.

It is this halcyon essence that the makers of Ojisan TCG have managed to recapture.
