Highway to the Combat Zone

Cyberpunk steps from the tabletop to, well, another, more different kind of tabletop

I love a skirmish game. I also love both lower and upper case C Cyberpunk. Unsurprisingly, Monster Fight Club’s Cyberpunk: Combat Zone has been on my radar for a while. Set in 2045 at the tail end of Cyberpunk RED’s Time of the Red and 32 years before the videogame, Combat Zone offers a very different Night City to the one fans of the latter will be familiar with. The eponymous Combat Zone – the name given to lawless stretches of the city abandoned by both the authorities and the corporations – is vast and exists in a state of near-constant gang warfare. Not great for the fictional inhabitants, but an ideal setting for a skirmish game featuring lots of characterful gangs engaging in fisticuffs.

Fortunately for me, Combat Zone is very, very good. Easy to pick up, with play that is fast and/or furious, but has enough variety and tactical depth to make it a game you’re going to want to keep coming back to. Combined with a comprehensive, great value starter set, this should be an easy recommendation, however there’s a potentially fatal flaw holding me back from going all in on an otherwise excellent game.
