Fans of Failbetter Games’ interactive fiction hit, Fallen London, have been clamoring for years for a pen-n-paper option for exploring the alternative, Victorian city. Steeped in the same gothic storytelling weird wonders that exemplified the original, Fallen London: The Roleplaying Game will make good on a desire felt by both players and the designers when it releases sometime in 2025.

Failbetter has tapped Magpie Games, designers of Avatar Legends, Root RPG and the upcoming Rapscallion, to realize the fifth city swallowed by the Neath, a labyrinth of alleys, soul-trading and love amidst endless horrors and oppression. As discussed below, you should set aside any expectations you have of Magpie and their past games—Fallen London: The Roleplaying Game apparently signals a new design era for the studio.

Rascal chatted with Magpie’s CEO Mark Diaz Truman and lead designer Brendan Conway, along with Failbetter’s narrative director Chris Gardiner, communications director Hannah Flynn, and writers James Chew, Luke van den Barselaar and George Lockett, for a better look at what fans new and old should expect for a return to Fallen London fifteen years in the making and what it takes to narrative prompts for dice and stats.
